巴士底監獄為一個彈藥庫，亦是封建專制統治的象徵。此堡壘式的建築主要用作監禁囚犯，其中包括來自富裕階層(包括知識分子、生活腐敗的貴族和觸犯偽冒罪的囚犯等)。守衛和起義者經歷了多個小時的戰鬥後，約有百名示威者陣亡，但巴黎人民最終取得勝利。傷亡情況激起了人民的憤怒，導致數名守衛於投降後被殘酷地處決。時至今日，攻陷巴士底監獄仍然是爭取自由的象徵。
The Bastille was an ammunition depot, a jail and also the symbol of monarchic absolutism. People from well off classes (intellectuals, nobles with a scandalous lifestyle, forgers etc.) were imprisoned there. The French Guards, along with the insurgents led to the Parisians’ victory after long hours of fighting which resulted in a hundred deaths among the assailants. These victims provoked the people's rage and several defenders were savagely massacred after the surrender. Today, this event is still the symbol of the fight for freedom. 資料：香港歷史博物館
