Until與when同樣是表示時間的連接詞，但用法不同。下面的例子把when與until作一比較。
I realized that I was late when I saw the time.
當我看看時間，知道自己遲到了。
I didn't realize that I was late until I saw time.
我看看時間，方才發現自己遲到了。（我不知道自己遲到了，直至我看看時間方才發現。）
在某時間前 原來情況一直存在
第一句直𤉸說出何時知道自己遲到了，用的動詞是正面肯定的方式(realized)。第二句逆向說出何時知道自己遲到了（一直都不知道自己遲到，直至看看時間才發現），用的動詞是否定方式(didn't realize)。
這闡明了一點：until用於表示在某個時間之前，或者在某個條件出現之前，原來的行動或情況一直存在，直至該時間或條件出現才告終，發生改變。
I did not have dinner until I finished my paper.
我一直沒有用晚飯，直至我完成論文。（我完成論文，才去用晚飯。）
Don't turn over the exam paper until you are told to do so.
請勿打開試卷，直至聽到宣布為止。
Until可以是連接詞或前置詞
Until可以是連接詞(conjunction)，後面用一個帶有動詞的副句 (clause)； 也可以是前置詞(preposition)，後面可用一個一個不帶動詞的短語 (phrase)，如名詞 (noun)。
The office will be open until 5 o'clock in the afternoon.
辦事處開放直至下午5時。
There wasn't any civil aviation service to the mountain regions until recently.
那山區一直沒有民航服務，直至最近才有所改變。
看下面的例子：
Until June 2008, there are 20,000 books in the library.
直到6月，圖書館有2萬本藏書。
這樣說其實有點奇怪，暗示在2008年6月之後，藏書可能多了，也可能少了。
只是盤點藏書 可以用as at
如果只是盤點藏書，標註某時圖書館的藏書數目，便不應該用until，可以用as at。
As at June 2008, there are 20,000 books in the library.
在2008年6月，圖書館有2萬本藏書。
記得：until 是表示在某個時間後，發生改變。
The results will be released next Tuesday. Until then, we can just wait.
