Bing Tau Gardens (Botanical Gardens),c. 1935
"Bing Tau" means the Governor, because he is also the commander of the army. In 1841-42, a temporary Governor's House was located inside the Gardens.
The construction of the Gardens began in 1860 and completed in 1871. The Albany Road divided the gardens into two parts: the "Big Bing Tau" and the "Second Bing Tau".
A fountain has been the focus of the "Big Bing Tau" . Beside it, there had been a statue in the 1880s. This statue was replaced by the statue of King George VI in 1958. In 1975, the name of the gardens changed to "Hong Kong Zoological & Botanical Gardens".
