地鐵原本由怡和洋行為首財團所承建。後來該公司放棄承建，港府自行承建，並在1975年11月正式動工。
地鐵第一期工程是由觀塘至石硤尾，於1979年9月30日舉行通車儀式。到了1985年5月31日，上環至柴灣的路線通車後，達到全線通車的目標。
世界上第一條專為迪士尼樂園而興建的鐵路專線，於2005年8月1日投入服務。
地鐵在2007年與九廣鐵路合併，易名為「港鐵」。

The project of the Mass Transit Railway(MTR) construction was led by the consortium of Jardine Matheson. Later, the group gave up the project rights and the Government eventually took it on. The construction work began in November 1975.
The opening ceremony of the Kwun Tong to Shek Kip Mei line was held on the 31st September 1979. On the 31st May 1985, after the opening ceremony of the Central to Chai Wan line, the MTR had reached its goal of opening all its lines.
The world's first train exclusively built to access the Disneyland was opened on the 1st August 2005.
The MTR Corporation and Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation merged in 2007, with the Chinese name being changed to "Hong Kong Railway Corporation".
