1911年3月,沙田進行飛機升空演練,經過數日失敗,終於在3月27日成功登上60呎的上空飛行。
之後,跑馬地至九龍城之間進行多次飛機演練,直至1920年代後期。
政府於1928年在九龍灣興建啟德機場,至1932年完工。到1938年,啟德機場已成遠東的主要民航站。1958年,伸出九龍灣海面的跑道工程完成。1962年,現代化的客運大樓落成。此後,啟德機場不斷擴建,直到1998年遷往赤立角為止。
Kai Tak Airport, C.1970
On March 1911, a trial flight was held in Sha Tin. After several days of failures, the plane succeeded in flying to a height of 60 feet.
Later on, various flying performances of planes were held till the end of 1920s.
In 1928, the Government began the construction work of Kai Tak Airport and it was completed in 1932.
By 1938, Kai Tak had already become the major aviation terminal in the Far East. In 1958, the runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay was completed. Also, a modern airport passenger terminal building was completed in 1962. The everlasting expansion of Kai Tak was stopped after the airport was moved to Chek Lap Kok in 1998. ■鄭寶鴻 香港歷史博物館榮譽顧問
