今年暑假，匯賢政治學苑首次開辦中學生通識班。除了教授中外典籍，並請來各方專家講解社會議題外，我和課程主任鄺禹韜十分著重英語培訓，透過批改學員的作文，解釋文法規則。
班中有幾位學員天資聰穎，見解很多，可惜礙於英語詞彙和文法把握不足，不能暢所欲言。這恐怕是因為校內沒有嚴謹的文法訓練，一些老師本身也不完全了解語法規則。
-ing及-ed均可形容人和事
有本地大學畢業生告訴我，曾聽中學英文老師說，形容詞以"-ing"和"-ed"結尾，分別在於前者形容物件，後者形容人！其實，這類形容詞叫"participial adjectives"，由分詞轉化而成。"-ing"是表達主動語態，或指出動作正進行；"-ed"則表示被動語態或動作已完成。例如動詞"excite"解作"使……激動或興奮"，形容詞"exciting(令人激動或興奮的)"取主動義，"excited(感到激動或興奮的)"則取被動義。至於"developing countries(發展中國家)"和"developed countries(已發展國家)"的"developing"和"developed"分別源自動詞"develop(發展)"的進行式和完成式。故"-ed"可形容事物，"-ing"也可形容人，如"This speaker is boring(這講者很悶人)."。
Therefore不能連接上句
很多中產家長不滿主流學校的英語教學質素，於是送子女到國際學校或海外讀書，令人惋惜。筆者會不時用實例討論常見的英語錯誤，現有兩個求職信實例，摘錄如下。
例子一：
"During my undergraduate study majoring in photography I mastered techniques of taking photos and designing graphics. from the internship in XXX Company I gained more experience, therefore I think I can do this job well."(我在大學主修攝影，精通攝影和圖像設計，並曾於XXX公司實習，累積經驗；因此我相信自己可以勝任。)
上文的主要問題是句逗和大小寫。句子如以"During......"和"From......"之類的短語起首，短語後應置逗號。"from the internship......"是一句之始，須用大寫"From"。另外，"therefore"是副詞，不能用以連接前一句。全段應改成：
"When majoring in photography, I mastered techniques of taking photos and designing graphics. From my internship in XXX Company, I gained more experience. Therefore, I think I can do this job well."
詞語性質 必須搞清
例子二：
"I feel greatly interest to work in this position. I am a graduate from Bachelor of Information Engineering.......I feel confidence to take this job well." (我對這個職位非常感興趣。我是信息工程學士……深信必能勝任。)
作者分不清動詞、名詞和形容詞。"interest"可作動詞或名詞，但形容詞"感興趣"是"interested"，配"in" + "-ing"或"in"+名詞。"Confidence(信心)"是名詞，形容詞為"confident"。第二句的字詞搭配也不妥，應改成：
"I feel greatly interested in this position. I have a Bachelor's degree in Information Engineering.......I feel confident that I can handle this job well."
