Work Place Training Added to College Courses

¡@A work-based learning programme jointly developed by the CCC Kung Lee College and the Hong Kong Institute of Education(IEdHK)has been launched. Mrs. Susan Ha Lau Yuen-yung, principal of the college, said that the Quality Education Fund has provided a subsidy amounting to HK$1.06 million to the programme and starting from late January this year, a total of 23 diploma students from the college will be assigned to 15 corporate partners including hotels, clubs and retailers, where they can receive training for a period of 6 months. The trainees will be paid an allowance of HK$2,500 to HK$3,000 a month. The entire programme accounts for 9 credits and students have to complete both in-campus face-to-face classes as well as field training.

¡@Mrs. Ha pointed out that with the introduction of the new senior secondary education system, junior secondary students will mostly be promoted in their own schools and Kung Lee College which offers only senior secondary courses will inevitably be affected. She said that this year the enrollment in senior secondary level one is about 200, a decrease of 50% compared to the figure for last year. The college had to overhaul its courses and introduce occupation-oriented elements to attract students and at the same time to offer an alternative of further education and job opportunity to the group of "left-behind" students, Mrs. Ha explained.

¡@Besides senior secondary classes, the college also offers one-year full-time diploma courses. At present, there are about 60 diploma students. Among these, 23 who major in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Business as well as Information Technology will be taking part in this work-based learning programme. To be awarded the 9 credits, the students must take not less than 120 hours face-to-face classes in Chinese language, English language, mathematics, information technology and interpersonal skills, and also complete at least 360 hours of field training. Starting from 20 January this year, the participants will be allocated to different corporate partners including the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Wing On Travel to receive field training. The face-to-face classes are scheduled every Monday and Tuesday.

¡@According to Mrs. Ha, the prerequisite for admission to these diploma courses is an education level of Form 5 or completion of either Project Yijin or a certificate programme. On completion of these diploma courses, graduates will be recognized as having obtained a level equivalent to the Qualification Framework level 3 and thereafter they can choose to find a job, pursue an associate degree or further their study overseas. ¡@¡½Translation by¶}©ú
