上次談到on與off這對介詞在配合某些動詞使用時，可以產生相對效果，例如turn on或turn off(開或關)。
配同一動詞 未必成對比
其實，這對介詞並不是每次與同一個動詞構成詞組時，都會成為正反對比。
以穿衣為例，穿上衣服是put on，可是脫下衣服不是put off，而是take off。例如：
He put on his raincoat and stepped into the rainstorm.
他穿上雨衣，步進風雨中。
As he returned home, he immediately took off his shoes and rushed to the toilet.
他回到家，立刻脫下鞋子，衝進洗手間。
Put Off意指擱置
既然put off不是脫衣服，那麼會是甚麼？Put off有多個意思，其中一個是暫緩進行一件事。假設有一對情侶本來已安排好婚事，因為某種原因須把婚事擱置，便可用put off。例如：
They put off their wedding to join the rescue team.
他們擱置了婚事，加入救援隊伍。
形容取消事情 可用Call Off
假如兩人不知何時才能重辦婚禮，與其暫時擱置，不如索性取消，那就不用put off(暫緩)，應用call off(取消)。例如：
They called off the wedding after a vigorous argument.
他們在激烈爭辯後，取消了婚事。
Call On不與Call Off相對
解作號召
有call off，也有call on。但call off是取消， call on不是復辦。Call on其中一個意思解作號召、呼喚。若覺單憑一己力量並不足夠，需要號召更多人加入，可用call on。例如：
They called on their friends to join in the fund-raising campaign.
他們號召一班朋友加入籌款行動。
Call off(取消)與call on(號召)，又是一對不是正反對比的on與off詞組。
Take On意指承擔責任
前面說過穿衣是put on，take off是脫衣服，那麼take on是甚麼意思？Take on有多個意思，其中一個是承擔起責任。例如：
He took on the responsibility as a captain and led the team in the rescue.
他承擔起隊長的責任，帶領隊員進行拯救行動。
以介詞構成詞組可以衍生不同的意義，令英語應用更靈活。然而，同學必須緊記，on/off並不一定構成意思相反的詞組。 ■linachu88@netvigator.com
