做學問、做研究，其中一個要訣是凡事追問到底，探索到底。「底」就是事件最根本的真相。英文字「bottom」（底），亦有此意，很多時解作真相或原委，與中文「底蘊」很相似。
非如表面 強調真實
英文短語「at bottom」就如廣東話的「其實」，用來強調人和事的真實一面，或者隱藏的一面，並非如外表所見一般。使用這個短語，可與表面的狀況作一對比。例如：
She is a light-hearted person at bottom.
她內裡是一個從容自若的人。（表面上，她可能是一個神經兮兮、很緊張的人。）
His talk was at bottom propaganda.
他的言論實際上是一番宣傳語言。（並不是像表面上的客觀言論。）
這樣的意思用at bottom，不必使用the，不要寫成at the bottom。
事情根源 根本原因
如果加了the，便成為另一句經常聽到或用到的短語「lie /be at the bottom of something」。這短語是指一些人或事，是一個事件或問題的底蘊、真正原因、基本因素。例如：
Lack of exercise is at the bottom of many health problems.
缺少運動是很多身體毛病的真正原因。
We should have guessed that the secretary was at the bottom of all the rumors about the company.
我們早該料到，所有有關公司的傳言，其實是來自那個秘書。
Everyone wants to find out what actually lies at the bottom of the problem.
人人都想查明那個問題發生的底蘊。
發掘真相 找出底蘊
如果要追查事情的真正原因，發掘真相，找出底蘊，可以用「get to the bottom of something」。
The doctor was not able to get to the bottom of the constant pain in the patient's chest.
那醫生沒法找出病人胸口常常作痛的真正原因。
We can never get to the bottom of the problem if they do not explain it to us.
如果他們不解釋，我們永遠不會知道問題的真正原因。
They don't know what has happened but they are determined to get to the bottom of why their application has failed.
他們不知道發生了甚麼事，但是他們下定決心要找出自己申請落敗的底蘊。
