今天想和大家分享最近遇到的小小難題。筆者剛接到一份兼職，翻譯一本關於地中海歷史的書，試譯小段時犯了幾個錯誤。其中一個錯誤挺有意思，原文是：
Three unintended visits to the nearby coast illustrate in metaphorical terms the dangers to be faced. The first ... The third visit took place a few years ago and, symptomatically, I do not know the illicit passengers' names or what became of them, but they ... Each of these visits highlights desires in all too much Western thinking about the Mediterranean ... the third to forget the awkward bits that we do not understand or want to know about, especially if they relate to North Africa west of Egypt.
這段大意是，做地中海的學問有很多陷阱或危險，他是指思想上的陷阱（in metaphorical terms），然後就舉了3個例子。第三個例子是講有次來自利比亞的難民船向希臘的基西亞島靠岸，被希臘當局扣押了起來。作者說自己symptomatically不曉得這些人的名字和下場。什麼叫「我帶病癥地忘記了難民的名字和下場」？當時筆者很好笑地譯為「我可能病了，記不起這幫非法乘客的名字和下場」。
使用上期簡單介紹的過的網頁版The Free Dictionary和Cambridge Dictionary，前者給出「of, relating to, or based on symptoms; constituting a symptom, as of a disease」，形容詞，即和病徵有關，或形成病徵；後者給出兩個定義，按次序第一個給出「If something bad is symptomatic of something else, it is caused by the other thing and is proof that it exists」的解釋， 第二個說「Specialized: medical: showing symptoms of a particular disease」。讀者可以發現，前者着重字面的定義，後者則把引伸的意思放在第一，醫學專用的定義放在第二位，可見劍橋字典認為引伸義更重要或更常見。
得知自己的錯誤後，筆者不解地查閱了數個網頁。除了上述的兩部電子字典，還有一個甚有意思的工具，名字叫Linguee (https://cn.linguee.com/)，它有趣的地方在於，輸入字詞（英或中）後，會自動搜索該字詞在中英兩種語言同時被翻譯的文本，再一一並列出來。以symptomatically為例，Linguee搜索無果，改為輸入symptomatic，即找到28個外部資源。大家不要以為這些是單純的corpus，不是的，他們是實際地被翻譯過的例子，並不是說在網絡上找到英文或中文例句，再用機器把他們翻譯。
例如香港立法會一份文件，英文寫道：I am not suggesting that sector should necessarily be filled by people from overseas, but it is symptomatic of the problem. 中文是：「我並非暗示該行業要由海外招聘人手去填補空缺，只是要指示這現象顯出了問題。」立法會譯為「顯出」。
讀了這個例子，筆者算是心裡有數，文中作者忘記難民的名字，是「顯出」一個東西，但那個東西是什麼？答案在段落末段，西方人對地中海過度的美化和想像令他們忽略一些殘酷的現實狀況，而這種想像很危險、很病態。從這裡回頭一看，即明白作者頗有自嘲和自我警示的意味。我姑且把句子重新譯為：「我犯了典型的西方式毛病，完全不記得這幫非法乘客的名字和下場。」
我們可以看到，不同工具有不同功能，當了解自己的「問題」後，選擇合適的工具解決困難，長久下來，英文一定會進步的。
