新界大嶼山有很多流浪牛，旅遊的時候常常會遇上，有大有小。看着牛群走路，慢吞吞的，就想起這短語until / till the cows come home。
「Until the cows come home」（要等到牛群回家的時候了），即是「很久，很長時間」的意思。自由放牧到草地的牛群，如果沒人催趕，都是一步一步慢吞吞地徐行，待牠們回到牛棚，需時很長，可能已是第二天。有些農場甚至把牛隻放牧到大草原一兩個月，牛群回家會是很久以後的事。所以，until the cows come home就用以比喻時間很長，用很多的時間。
We have plenty of time today. We can listen to our favorite music till the cows come home.
我們今天有很多時間，可以長時間盡情地聽我們喜愛的音樂。
The two parties can argue until the cows come home, but it is not likely that they will reach an agreement.
這兩個政黨可以長期無休止地爭辯下去，但是他們不大可能達成協議。
He did not change his mind though his friends talked to him until the cows came home.
雖然他的朋友花了很長時間游說，但是他沒有改變心意。
看着牛群中的小牛，亦聯想到一句在美國流行的俚語have a cow（產小牛）。說have a cow，意思是感到很苦惱、焦躁、激動。有說這是因為生產是一件苦事，而小牛體型較大，誕下小牛倍感痛苦，所以用have a cow比喻對某一些事感到極為惱怒、氣憤，甚或有過激的負面反應，而說don't have a cow，就是勸喻別人冷靜下來、放鬆一下，不要動氣。
Her parents will definitely have a cow if they know that she has failed her English test.
如果父母知道她英文測驗不合格，肯定會極生氣，大動肝火。
Don't have a cow over this. It's no big deal. I'll take care of the problem myself.
不用太激動，這不是大不了的事，問題我自己可以處理。
If you find that your classmates are not treating you fairly, don't have a cow. Talk to them and let them know how you feel.
如果你發現同學對你不公平，不用動氣，應該好好與他們談談，讓他們知道你的感受。
順道一提，英式英語有一句意思相似的短語，不說一隻小牛，而說一群小貓，用have kittens形容為了某些事感到十分憤怒或憂慮。貓一次會產下幾隻小貓，可以想像，是多麼苦惱的一件事。
His wife nearly had kittens when she found out that he spent the savings on buying a new car.
妻子發現他把儲蓄花在購買新車上，差點氣炸了。
上面提到的兩個與牛有關的用語，字面解釋與實際意思看來相差甚遠，但其實是源於農場養牛的一些觀察，只要理解，就不難明白。■Lina CHU
