■吃飽了豆形容人活力十足。 資料圖片Bean / Beans（豆子），小小的種子，卻種類繁多，營養豐富。豆類食物含有耐久性澱粉質、蛋白質、食物纖維和其他礦物質，可以日常食用，亦可作為動物飼料。
飼養馬匹，就是用豆作為飼料，因為豆是高能量食物，馬匹吃飽了豆，自然精神奕奕，健康有力。英文亦引申用full of beans（吃飽了豆）形容一些人精力充沛、活力十足，甚或士氣高昂、熱情高漲。
The little boy has fully recovered. He is now running around, laughing and full of beans.
這個小男孩已經完全康復，現在到處跑，開懷大笑，活力十足。
These young people are bright, intelligent and full of beans. They work with energy and enthusiasm.

豆雖然是營養食品，但畢竟體積很小，通常都是小小一粒的，所以beans亦用來比喻一些極其細小的數量。說一個人not know beans about something（對某件事丁點豆子都不知道），即是強調這人對某件事情完全不懂、一竅不通，沒有半點認識。
It's really disappointing. There is not a bean in his report.
真令人失望。他的報告空洞無物。
Don't ask me about tennis; I don't know beans about it.
網球的事不要問我，我對這一竅不通。
He wants to have his own restaurant but he does not know beans about running a business.
他想開一間餐廳，但是對於經營一個企業一竅不通。
豆可以用作食材，但亦有其他作用。據說古希臘已有選舉制度，不記名，就是用小小的豆子來投票，白豆代表贊成，黑豆代表反對，投票時把豆放入一個瓶子裡，完成後點算黑白豆的數目。如果不小心，中途發生意外，打翻了瓶子，豆子灑出，那秘密就洩露了。有說這就是短語spill the beans（打翻了豆）的來源。說某人spill the beans，即是說他把秘密告訴了別人，有意無意間洩露了應該保密的資料。
His mom told him not to let other people know about her age but he spilled the beans to his friends.
