■ 英文中跟蝙蝠有關的用語，都是基於蝙蝠的特性，而且形象都不太好。 資料圖片近半年，新型冠狀病毒肆虐全球，造成大量人命傷亡。科學家發現這病毒有蝙蝠基因，所以大家都對蝙蝠留意多了，認識多了。蝙蝠的英文是bat，是遍布全世界的哺乳類動物，住在洞穴或森林，夜行。有些蝙蝠眼睛大，視力很好，但亦有蝙蝠眼睛小，視力退化。大部分蝙蝠捕食昆蟲，在空中獵食，捕獵速度極快。
英文中跟蝙蝠有關的用語，都是基於蝙蝠的這些特性，以蝙蝠作比喻。例如蝙蝠多居於黑暗地方，視力退化，所以形容人視力不好、看不清楚、視線糢糊，就會說(as) blind as a bat （像蝙蝠一般瞎眼）。
The old woman is as blind as a bat without her glasses.
那老婦不戴眼鏡時像蝙蝠一般弱視，看不清。
She can't possibly read the little words in these documents. She is blind as a bat.
她不可能閱讀這些文件的細小字體。她的視力像蝙蝠一般不濟。
又例如蝙蝠捕食十分敏捷，飛行速度極快，所以形容行動迅速，動作快捷，就會說 like a bat out of hell（如逃出地獄的蝙蝠）。想像蝙蝠避開地獄烈火，猛然拍翼從地獄飛出的景象，所以這是比喻一些動作快速但狂亂。
When the thief saw the police, he ran away like a bat out of hell.
那賊人看見警察，如飛出地獄的蝙蝠一樣，發了瘋拔足狂奔。
He was arrested because he drove his car like a bat out of hell in the middle of the night.
他被捕了，因他在深夜時分瘋狂飆車。
蝙蝠猛烈拍翼飛行，快速但雜亂無章，而蝙蝠這個動作亦用作比喻一些瘋狂、混亂的行為。說某人have bats in the belfry（鐘樓內有蝙蝠）是一個暗喻，說這人行為愚蠢、失常。用語中的belfry是教堂頂部的鐘樓，很多時是蝙蝠棲息的地方，蝙蝠受鐘聲影響，會到處亂飛，以belfry比喻人的頭部，have bats in the belfry即是頭腦混亂，想法沒道理，行事不理性。
The risk of contacting the virus hasn't disappeared. You have bats in the belfry if you don't wear a mask in public areas.
感染病毒的風險尚未消除，如果在公共地方不戴口罩，根本就是腦袋有問題。
What he said is completely nonsense. He must have bats in his belfry.
他說的全都是廢話，他一定是精神錯亂、發了瘋。
據說形容詞batty亦是由此而來，是糊塗、愚笨、錯亂的意思。
This is certainly a batty idea. Nobody will agree.
這肯定是愚蠢的主意，不會有人同意。
Somebody from the social welfare department should go and help the batty lady. She lives alone and often yells in her flat.
社會福利署應該派人幫助那個神志不清的女人。她獨居，常常在屋內大吼大叫。
從這些英文用語看來，蝙蝠bat的形象不太好，但中文蝙蝠的蝠字與福字同音，形象又不是太差，這算是東西文化的一點差異吧。■ Lina CHU
