1906年9月18日一場颱風襲港，死去約2萬人。1908年，政府在油麻地與旺角之間，興建一所避風塘，於1915年落成。政府須徵收燈塔稅以彌補建築費用。
避風塘內有一設於山東街與塘尾道交界的渡海小輪碼頭，一直運作至約1979年。
1994年起，這一帶進行填海，新填地上興建奧運站及多條連接新機場的幹道。
Mongkok typhoon shelter, c.1970
On 18th September of 1906, a typhoon attacked Hong Kong and 20,000 lives were lost. In 1908, a typhoon shelter located between Yau Ma Tei and Mongkok was constructed and it was completed in 1915. The government set up tax to cover the cost.
There's a ferry pier inside the shelter. It had been operated until 1979.
The reclamation of the shelter began in 1994. Olympia Station and several roads to the new airport were built in this area. ■鄭寶鴻 香港歷史博物館名譽顧問
