伏爾泰是一位哲學家、作家、歷史學家及劇作家，他亦是啟蒙時代法國精神的真正化身。他於1756年出版了一本批評路易十五的歷史書《路易十四的世紀》。這位深得人心的伏爾泰逝世前在巴黎獲得表彰，被選為法國學院院長。13年後，於1791年7月，革命時期的政府向他致以莊嚴的敬意，他的遺體獲移送至先賢祠。
A philosopher, writer, historian and drama author, Voltaire was the true incarnation of the French spirit in the Age of Enlightenment. He published in 1756 a large history volume "The Century of Louis XIV" where he criticised Louis XV. Universally admired Voltaire was towards the end of his life recognised in Paris where he was elected as Director of the French Academy. He died in Paris surrounded by admiration. Thirteen years later (in July 1791) the French Revolution would pay him a solemn homage by transferring his remains to the Pantheon. ■資料：香港歷史博物館
