租，即是付一筆款項，換取某些東西的使用權，而且是有指定期限的使用權。
中文很簡單，一個「租」字便解決了。英文可不一樣，即時想到的用語，至少有hire，rent，let3個字詞。
Hire指短期 長期用rent
He hired a car and drove around the Scottish highland.
他租了一輛汽車在蘇格蘭高地自駕遊。
不過，如果是長期租用，特別是房屋，按月或定期支付租金，通常會用rent，不會用hire。
He rented an apartment in the district because there were many elite schools in the neighbourhood.
他在該區租了一個住宅單位，因為附近有很多名校。
Rent在美式英語泛指短期或長期租用。
He rented a car and drove along the west coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
他租了一輛汽車在美國西岸自駕遊，從三藩市一直到洛杉磯。
He rented an office in Central to start his business.
他在中區租了一個辦公室開業。
物主租出東西稱作hire out
上面談的是使用者向物主或業主租用物件。如果由物主或業主租出予使用者，該怎麼寫？可以在hire或rent後面加out，或者再加to。
He rented (hired) out his farmhouse for use as a hostel in the summer.
他在夏天把農舍短期租出作旅舍用途。
She rented out a room to an overseas student from Britain.
她租出一間房予一個來自英國的海外留學生。
Let專指業主有房出租
除了hire out和rent out之外，我們常在報章雜誌看到另一個詞：let。
Let專指租出住房供人使用，是業主租予住客。
He let his apartment on the 10th floor (out) to an American couple.
他把10樓的單位租予一對美國夫婦。
如果在報章廣告或告示見到「Flats to Let」，就是有房出租。
