Western District, C.1930
Sheung Wan(right)and Sai Ying Pun(left)can be seen in the photo when you look from the Mid-levels.
In the middle, there is the Western Market(Northern Portion)which was built in 1906. It became a shopping and catering centre in early 1990s.
The tallest building was the Queen's Hotel which was built in mid 1920s. There were a garden and a recreation area on its roof top. Its name was changed to Sun Kwong later, and was demolished in 1970s to build the Kai Tak Commercial Building.
Connaught Road and Des Voeux Road Central beside the Hotel were congested with hostels, it was a brothel area of the lower-class Chinese. ■
