On與off這對介詞經常帶有相反的意義，他們常用以表示開關和上下的意義，例如在機器或用具的開關掣上就常用on代表開、off代表關。
動詞後配置 可得相反意義
有一些動詞配上介詞on與off，可以得出相反的意義。
譬如說，switch on(開)與switch off(關)。
He switched on the light as he entered the room.
他一進房間便開燈。
We should switch off the light when we leave the room.
我們離開房間時便應關燈。
用於Turn 亦解開關
另外，亦可用於turn，例如turn on是「開」，turn off是「關」。
The boy turned on the television once he got back home from school.
那男孩放學回家後，立即扭開電視機。
Always turn off the air-conditioner when you don't need it.
我們在不需要的時候，應該關掉空調。
另作上下對比
On和off還有上下的對比。譬如get on(上)和get off(下)。
We must get on this train or we will miss the flight.
我們必須登上這趟列車，否則趕不上那班飛機。
A lot of passengers will get off at the next station.
很多乘客會在下一個站下車。
Hop-on-hop-off Coach
全日任搭觀光
一些旅遊城市會設立觀光巴士服務，通常買一張全日乘車票，便可以在一日內隨時登車、下車，到處觀光。這類觀光巴士稱為hop-on-hop-off coach。例如：
With a day pass, we can hop on and hop off the sightseeing coach at any stop anytime in one day.
拿着一日乘車票，我們可以在一天內，在任何一站隨時登上或登下觀光巴士。
一些城市配備汽車渡輪，接載駕車人士前往離島。車子從一邊駛進渡輪，在另一邊駛出。這些渡輪稱為roll-on-roll-off ferry。
They made use of the roll-on-roll-off ferry to go to the beautiful island on their car.
他們利用汽車渡輪，開車往那美麗的小島。
然而，動詞配上介詞on與off也不一定是相對相反的，以後再談。
