蘇格蘭（Scotland）公投要求獨立，最終人民決定留在聯合王國（United Kingdom）。有地方想獨立自主，人更要獨立自主。那麼「獨立自主」這成語應當怎麼用英文說呢？大體上都跟stand（站）和foot（腳）有關，強調自己用雙腳站立，可說stand on one's own feet，即「用自己的腳站立」，這是最形象化的「獨立」了。
如綿羊陷沼澤 正下沉沒逃跑
20世紀初英國著名作家勞倫斯（DH Lawrence）劇作《一觸即發》（Touch and Go），一開首是Willie Houghton教訓無可無不可、不知自由為何物的煤礦工人（collier(s)）。他對他們說：You're stuck in a sort of mud of contentment, and you feel yourselves sinking, but you make no efforts to get out. You bleat a bit, like sheep in a bog - but you like it, you know. You like sinking in - you don't have to stand on your own feet then（你們陷入了一堆類似滿足現狀的泥巴中，而你們感覺到自己正在下沉，但你們沒有努力逃出來。你們會咩咩抱怨一點，就像沼澤中的綿羊──但你們喜歡這樣，你們這點知道。你們喜歡沉迷下去──那樣你們便不用獨立自主）。
少女須有專業 始能面對考驗
另一個類似說法是多了一個two，即stand on one's own two feet。經常以猶太人大屠殺（the Holocaust）為題材的美國著名作家兼藝術家Judith Weinshall Liberman，在她的感人自傳《My Life into Art 》中便曾這麼說： She felt that a young lady had to have a serious profession so she could stand on her own two feet and be prepared to meet life's potential challenges（她覺得一個少女必須有正式的專業，才能獨立自主，並準備就緒面對生命中可能出現的考驗）。後來她又談到母親對她的期望： She wanted me to have a vocation which would enable me to stand on my own two feet no matter what the vicissitudes of life might be（她想我有一個職業，令到我無論人生如何起跌浮沉，都可以獨立自主）。
