農曆新年剛過，大家都應該吃了不少賀年食品，其中當然少不了各種糕點，包括蘿蔔糕、芋頭糕、年糕、紅豆糕等等。各式各樣糕點放在面前，如果只看不嚐，就不可能知道哪一種味道好，哪一種不合口味，一定要吃過才知道。
英文有句諺語表達了這個意思：The proof of the pudding is in the eating。pudding是布丁，是西方甜點，像中國人的糕點。
諺語的字面意義是，要證明布丁的味道或品質好壞，唯有靠吃和品嚐才會知道。引伸出來，要判斷一些事物的價值，一定要靠驗證和結果。即是說，要找出一些理論、主張、意見的真正價值，唯有透過實際應用而得出的成果，才會知道。正如人們常常說的，「實踐是檢驗真理的唯一標準」。
These theories about education sound good, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. We need to put them into practice and see if they work.
這些教育理論聽起來很好，但是不知道行不行得通。我們要做做看，看它成效如何。

總統的計劃是否真的如人們想的那麼好，要實踐過才能證明。
