路易十六是一個生不逢時，而且性情古怪的國王。雖然他在外交事務上有時會表現非凡，但在內政方面，卻不曾(亦不願)聽從開明的內閣部長的意見，為君主政體進行改革。在朝廷內極端保守派包括皇后和她的支持者的影響下，他表現軟弱但喜用暴力，處事猶豫不決。他虛假的性格促使他採取雙面政策，最終失去王位。
This unfortunate King with a strange personality had sometimes shown he could be great in foreign affairs. But at home he had never been able (nor wanted) to undertake the renovation of the monarchy suggested by his enlightened cabinet ministers which was always abandoned by him. Weak but with surges of violence and indecision, he was under the pernicious influence of the Queen and her clique i.e. the most conservative part of the Court.. His dissimulative character pushed him to continually adopt a double faced policy which led to his demise. 資料：香港歷史博物館
