Iondanthren was an organically synthesised dye from India. It was used to colour many kinds of fabric, including cotton, silk and wool. The dye was available in many colours but the most common was blue. Chinese manufacturers made use of this dye to produce what was known as Iondanthren Cloth. Female students, intellectuals and the daughters of prestigious families loved to have exquisitely tailored qipao made out of the fabric. Since the fabric came mostly in one single colour, the final product was natural yet tasteful.
