Chen Hongshou(1598-1652) was a native of Zhuji, Zhejiang province. He was thwarted in his early attempt to enter into officialdom. He had once been a monk and earned his living as a professional painter. Being a well-educated man, Chen was equally proficient in poetry and calligraphy. Having developed figure painting as his forte, he enjoyed an equal fame with Cui Zizhong (ca.1595-1644), hence yielding their collective appellation of "Chen of the South and Cui of the North". His figure paintings are characterized by exaggerated and archaistic forms. The folds of the draperies were drawn with fine, smooth and tightly disciplined lines; whilst his colouring techniques resemble that of Wu Daozi (act. ca.710-760). The forms and colours in his landscapes and bird-and-flower paintings are also rich in decorative flavour. Another art form closely related to his figure painting is his woodblock print, which was marked by a distinctive personal style.■資料:香港藝術館
