今天要談的是help。不是喊救命，而是幫忙的意思。
先看一看這個例子。
Help+infinitive意指幫忙
He helped his nephew to repay the bank loan.
他幫助侄兒清償銀行貸款。
另一例子：
The students help to set up the stage for the concert.
學生們幫忙布置舞台以便舉行音樂會。
兩個例子中的help是幫忙，第一個例子是幫助某人，第二個例子是直接動手幫忙做某件事，沒有指明是幫助誰。
這裡help(幫忙)的用法是help + to infinitive。或者可用沒有‘to’的infinitive。
He helped his nephew repay the bank loan.
The students help set up the stage for the concert.
這個寫法也十分常見。
在上述所有例子中，不能在help後面用-ing形式的動詞。這是錯誤的。因為這些例子都是指「幫助別人」或「幫忙」進行某事。
Can't / couldn't help 解作沒法停止
可是，另一種以help構成的句子，卻可在help後面用-ing形式的動詞。不過，這時的help前面要加上cannot或could not，而且意思不是「幫忙」，是「沒法停止或制止」。
千萬要注意，句子的動詞必須是cannot/could not help或can't/couldn't help，意思是「沒法」。而且，在help後面的動詞，必須是-ing形式。看一看下面的例子。
Many of us can't help wondering why he was awarded this prize.
我們沒法不去猜疑為甚麼他獲頒這個獎項。
Upon hearing the news, we couldn't help laughing.
聽到消息，我們禁不住笑了出來。
另一寫法是在cannot help後面加but，然後再加動詞，意義也一樣。
Many of us can't help but wonder why he was awarded this prize.
Upon hearing the news, we couldn't help but laugh.
所以，‘help’不只是幫助，後面加infinitive還是-ing，要視乎‘help’的意思。linachu88@netvigator.com
