Enjoy Life in China and Cherish the Opportunity to Learn
American student Randy is a year 3 undergraduate of the New York University majoring in international relations and journalism. He has come to Shanghai as an exchange student in the East China Normal University. Besides studying in the university, he also made full use of his spare time by having an internship for 3 months in the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai where he performed editorial duties for in-house corporate publications. He said the job has not only enhanced his editing and writing skills but also enabled him to have a deeper understanding of China's economic development and her position in the world.
As Randy sees it, China is a rising economic centre of the world. "Particularly in the financial centre of Shanghai, gaining work experience here adds another bright mark to my resume. This will be very helpful in the future when I look for a job. I believe my practical experience here in China can help me stand out from my counterparts." he said.
He mentioned jokingly that studying and working in China is now seen by the American youngsters as something cool and trendy. "My fellow undergraduates envy me a great deal." he said. He also said that he enjoys living in China right now and would consider working in China for 3 or 4 years after he graduates.
Lahai Koroma, who comes from Sierra Leone, is a master degree holder. With a degree majoring in Chemistry and Physics, he has been employed by the Egret Pharma(Shanghai)Company Limited as a trainee. After having worked in China for 4 months, he finds the training in China very practical and thinks that he has benefited a lot from the experience. Lahai has the feeling that China is becoming more and more open and the way of life is also similar to that of the Western world. "Here both husband and wife go out to work and in a way, this ensures the successful implementation of the one family one child policy." he said.
To those foreign trainees who will soon come to China, Lahai advised, "We must learn to tolerate and accommodate people from other countries, no matter whether they are black or white, because we are one and the same." Lahai has planned to teach chemistry in the Eastern Polytechnic in Kenema, a city of Sierra Leone, when he finishes his training in China, and then to pursue a doctorate degree. ■translation by 開明
