Dangling Modifiers逐個數二之一
上期和同學分享了在寫文章時應引入變化，並提及3種方法。其中，方法三要求同學用opening word or phrase 作句子的起首。現在，讓我們review這個方法。
例一
1.Lina celebrated Thanksgiving with her friends last night. Lina didn't finish her assignment. (Original)
2.Celebrating Thanksgiving with her friends last night, Lina didn't finish her assignment (Revised)
上次提到revised 的句子比用兩句simple sentences 去表達同?的idea 好；因為revised 的句子為文章帶來變化。
修飾不當 弄出笑話
今天，筆者希望繼續講述這個方法，原因是很多同學在運用opening phrases時用得不恰當，最後不但表達不到想講的東西，反而弄出很多笑話。簡單說，很多時opening phrase變成了一個dangling modifier. 首先，何為dangling modifier？Dangling modifier是指句子中的modifier（修飾詞）沒有清楚指出它修飾的東西或concept。Modifiers可以是一個word、phrase或clause。
例二
Being absent for the test, Morris provided his teacher with a doctor's certificate.
在例二中，「Being absent」的句子是沒有doer。在英文的句子中，如果之前那句子沒有明確表明doer，那麼doer一定是後面句子的subject。換句話說，「Being absent」是用來形容Morris－Morris was absent for the test.
主語不相配 產生荒謬句
而在寫文章時，荒謬句子的產生其實源於後面句子的subject與前面句子的implied doer不相配。
例三
Being absent for the test, a doctor's certificate was provided. （X）
在例三，從句子結構來講，句子的意思變成a doctor's certificate (subject of the 2nd sentence) was absent for the test。這當然是illogical 的。
例四
After reading the whole book, the concept remains unconvincing.（X）
從句子的結構，例四的意思變成the concept reads the whole book。同樣地，這句子變得很不合理。
所以如果同學想用opening phrase，請記緊看清楚在opening phrase中的implied doer與後面句子的subject是否配合。不然的話，同學的文章將會鬧出很多笑話。下一期會講述如何避免dangling modifiers的產生。■Dr. A. Chan
