The Hong Kong SAR government unveiled its long-awaited political reform proposals, which - if passed in Legislative Council - will allow Hongkongers to choose our own chief excutive for the first time in 2017. Opposition "pan-democrats", however, have vowed to veto the proposed electoral package that will be voted upon in the legislature this summer.

The proposal outlined that the nominating procedures of the Nomination Committee (NC) shall be divided into two stages, namely the stage of "members recommendation" and the stage of "committee nomination". The candidates hoping to run must first be voted for by members of the nominating committee. The persons seeking nomination and obtain the highest number of endorsement of more than half of all the NC members could formally become candidates. The candidates that make it through will then run for election by the general population of more than five million eligible voters.

A recent poll indicated that more than 60 percent of Hongkongers feel the Legislative Council should pass the government's political reform package while 30 percent disagree. About 83.3 percent say the legislature should heed public opinion and 63.7 percent say they are pessimistic about the prespect of universal suffrage if the reform package is to be rejected.
Let's siege the opportunity to strive for the implementation of universal suffrage for the election of the Chief Executive in 2017. I do believe the majority of the people in Hong Kong cannot wait to see this happened. I am here to call for the "pan democrats" to join us on the effort to take a step forward.
