Bird's Bridge (Queen's Road West), c. 1900
Looking east from Wilmer Street. The "bridge" actually was a causeway constructed in 1841, using to connect the Seaman's Hospital. In 1848, Hong Kong's first surgical operation was performed in this hospital.
The Seaman's Hospital moved to Wan Chai in the same year and the construction there had been used as the Civil Hospital. In the 1960s, the name of the Civil Hospital was changed to "Sai Ying Pun Jockey Club Polychinics". An underground toilet was built beneath the causeway in 1911 and closed a few years ago.
