Rickshaws, c. 1968
Rickshaws were introduced from Japan to Hong Kong in the 1870s. In 1895, there were fifteen rickshaws in Kowloon Peninsula. In 1903, rickshaws began to run on the newly constructed Tai Po Road which spans from Kowloon to Tai Po in the New Territories.
Rickshaws began to decline after the popularity of buses and taxis in the 1930s and after World War II. During the Japanese Occupation, because of the lack of motor vehicles, rickshaws became popular as a mode of transport . The number of rickshaws has become fewer since the 1960s and now only a few are still there mainly for taking photos by tourists.
