Respect Professor Tsui's decision and do not politicize his departure
香港大學校長徐立之上月宣布，明年8月約滿後不再續約。他在談到離任原因時指出，至明年完成任期為止，已在港大服務了整整10年，考慮到學校是持續發展的機構，一定要有更新，認為這是一個對港大有利的決定。他更明確指出，這一決定不涉及政治原因。
徐立之以國際權威學者身份主政港大近10年，貢獻良多。他在調查中多次榮膺全港最佳校長，任內推動港大面向國際背靠祖國，大幅提升科研水平，令港大在多個世界高等院校排名中屢創新高。在去年《泰晤士報高等教育特刊》中，港大排名更高達全球21位，屬近年最高排名，正反映徐立之任內致力提升科研及教育質素的表現，得到國際社會認同。
同時，徐立之致力推動港大西部校園的擴建計劃，為迎接大學4年制作出了周全的準備；在沙士期間帶領醫學院團隊追查神秘病菌源頭，為國際社會應對沙士病毒立下汗馬功勞。港大理學院院長郭新形容徐立之在任期間，可能是港大最成功的10年，絕非過譽之辭。必須指出的是，徐立之的離任乃個人決定，而他已經清楚解釋了箇中原因，事件理應告一段落。
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Professor Tsui, Lap-Chee announced last month that he would not seek a renewal after the expiry of his present contract with the university in August next year. Talking about his decision to leave the post, he said that he will have served HKU for a full ten-year term when he completes his term of office in the coming year; and considering the need for rejuvenation in HKU, which is an ever-developing institution, he believed that his decision is good for the university. He specifically pointed out that there was no political reason behind his decision.
As an internationally renowned scholar, Professor Tsui has taken the helm of HKU for nearly ten years and has made a lot of contributions. He has been honored Hong Kong's best vice-chancellor in a number of surveys. During his term of office, he has led HKU in pursuance of internationalization with the support of the mother country, and has greatly upgraded the standard of scientific research in the university. With these efforts, HKU reached new heights in many world university rankings. Last year's Times Higher Education ranked HKU as the 21st university of the world, the highest ranking ever achieved in recent years. This reflects recognition by the international community to Professor Tsui's achievements in enhancing the quality of both scientific research and teaching in the university during his service.
In addition, Professor Tsui put in a lot of effort to push forward the expansion of the Island West campus of HKU, making comprehensive preparation for the 4-year undergraduate curriculum. During the SARS outbreak, Professor Tsui, leading the team in the Faculty of Medicine in tracing the origin of the mysterious disease, made essential contribution to the international community in the combat against the SARS virus. It is no exaggeration when the Dean of Faculty of Science, Professor Sun Kwok, described the ten years of Professor Tsui's service as probably the most successful era in the history of HKU. It has to be pointed out that the stepping down of Professor Tsui is a personal decision, and as he has made clear the reason behind his decision, the file should be closed now.
