近日有一個電視宣傳片勸諭市民在有爭議糾紛的時候，用調解的方法解決問題，把結打開，英文版「把結打開」的說法是「untie the knot」。
英文字「knot」是「結」的意思，把繩子打個結扣起來的「結」。打結通常會寫成「tie a knot」，而把結解開就說「untie/undo/loosen a knot」。
We packed everything in a box, put a string around it and tied a knot.
我們把所有東西都放進箱內，用一根繩繞箱子一圈再打一個結。
The child untied the knot immediately to see what was inside the parcel.
那孩子立刻解開結子，看看包裹內是甚麼。
Knot可比喻心理困惑
除了有形的繩結之外，「knot」亦可比喻無形的心理上的結，即一些困惑和煩燥的感覺，或者環境中一些令人困擾不知所措的情況。宣傳片中的「untie the knot」就是說解除一些爭拗而令人不安的困境。
形容一個人非常困惑，可以用短語「in knots」，而說「tie somebody (up) in knots」則是說把這人弄糊塗了，令他困惑。
He feels in knots whenever his parents argue.
每當他的父母爭吵，他都感到很困擾。
The doctor didn't explain clearly and was tying the patient's family members in knots.
醫生沒有清楚解釋情況，令病人家屬疑慮重重。
Don't tie yourself up in knots. Try to find out what has actually happened.

Tie the knot指結婚
「結」不一定是不好的。結婚就是一件好事。結婚─get married有一個同義詞就是tie the knot。這裡的「the knot」可理解為把兩個人連在一起的結。

They decide to tie the knot after dating for just three months. We hope that their relationship won't be in knots after marriage.
