大家知道嗎？助動詞「may」 可以傳達很多意思。可見於下面加里（Gary）與老闆的對話。
Gary: Boss, may I interrupt and talk to you about the China project?
Boss: Yes, sure. You may come in and tell me what has happened.
Gary: I'm sorry but we may not be able to finish our work on time.
Boss: Oh, what, may I ask, is the reason?
加里：我可以打擾一下嗎？我想與你談談中國的項目。
老闆：當然可以。請進來，告訴我情況如何。
加里：很抱歉，我們可能無法如期完成工作。
老闆：是嗎？我想知道是甚麼原因。
上面的例子多次使用may 。但各個「may」各有特定涵義。
表可能性 亦表批准
首先，「may」可以表達可能性。如上面對話中的We may not be able to finish our work on time. 又如：
It may rain tomorrow. Bring an umbrella.
明天可能下雨。帶上雨傘吧。
其次，「may」亦可用作允許、批准及許可的意思，而且是有禮貌的用語。上面的You may come in and tell me what has happened則是一個例子。又如：
Customers may ask for a refund if they are not satisfied with the products.
顧客如果對產品不滿意，可以要求退款。
有禮貌表請求
除此之外，「may」經常用在問句，有請求、請問之意，而且令發問時的態度更加顯得有禮貌，就如對話中的May I interrupt and talk to you about the China project? 又如：
May the deadline be postponed?
限期可以推遲嗎？
May I ask you about the application procedures?
請問申請手續為何？
可是，短語「may I ask」 則很有趣。在應用上，它可以加插在問句當中，以看來有禮貌、客氣的方式表達一些不滿或不同意的態度。類似的「might I ask/know/inquire」亦有相同用途。上面對話中的Oh, what, may I ask, is the reason?就用了這表達方式。又例如：
What, may I ask, is the point of repeating the same points again and again?
我想知道一再重複相同的一些論點意義何在？
Why are you late to the meeting, might I know?
我想知道你為甚麼開會遲到？
雖然用了may I ask這個短語，似乎變得客氣了一點，但這些問句都是略帶不悅的口吻。■ Lina CHU
