近日在港常聽到甚至看到「勿忘初衷」這個四字詞，它似乎並非成語，而跟它意思頗相近的成語大概是「貫徹始終」。英文應當怎麼說呢？有一個常見說法是carry through to the end，字面意思是「一直繼續，直到終結」。例如：In almost all he did, he very seldom carried through to the end（他做任何事，幾乎都極少貫徹始終）。英國軍官考爾威爾（Charles Edward Callwell）也是著名的軍事理論家、史學家、傳記作家，他的小書《小型戰爭》（Small Wars）更成為英國陸軍的官方教科書，當中有這麼一句話：In warfare against undisciplined opponents or against forces of inferior morale, the role of artillery is not so much to prepare the way for the infantry as to complete the work which the infantry have been unable to carry through to the end（在對抗缺乏紀律的對手或士氣低落的部隊時，炮兵部隊的職責與其說是為步兵準備一切，毋寧說是完成步兵未能貫徹始終的工作）。
始終不渝 堅持到底
跟「貫徹始終」意思相似的有「始終不渝」；當中的「渝」，解作「變更」、「改變」。不管是「貫徹始終」還是「始終不渝」，英文都有很多類似說法，最簡單的是stick to it，字面意思是「堅持完成它」。例如：His parents always teach him that, whatever he has started, he must stick to it（他父母總教誨他，不管他開始了甚麼事，都應當始終不渝）。納粹德國宣傳部長戈培爾（Joseph Goebbels）一向秉承希特拉的「彌天大謊」（big lie）宣傳伎倆。他曾寫過一篇叫〈來自邱吉爾的謊言工廠〉（From Churchill's Lie Factory）的文章，裡面說：The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous（英國人跟隨的原則，是若要說謊便要說彌天大謊，並且貫徹始終。他們堅持自己的謊言，即使這樣可能令他們看來荒謬絕倫）。生活在當今世代，我們對此應當不會陌生。
