中國人學英語，常碰到的難題之一是介詞片語 (Prepositional Phrases)的用法，看看下列舉例：
1.They couldn't drive past because there was a big crowd ___ their way.
(因為前路被一大群人阻擋，他們駕駛的車輛不能通過。)
2.They had to ask for directions ____ their way to the scenic spot.
(他們必須沿途問路，找出到那風景區的途徑。)
用錯了便詞不達意
第一句必須用 “in their way” 而第二句是 “on their way”，用錯了便詞不達意了。
考考您用介詞片語的功力：
1.There is no place ____ earth that isn't affected by pollution. (這地球上沒有地方不受污染。)
2.He spoke ____ behalf of his company to welcome the guests. (他代表公司向賓客致歡迎詞。)
3.She spent so thriftlessly that she soon got herself _____ debt. (她揮霍無度，很快債台高築。)
4.They are _____ a loss and don't know what to do next. (他們惘然若失，不知所措。)
5.It is really ____ the teachers' credit that they have done so well in the examination. (他們考試成績斐然，歸功於老師。)
6.She has been ____ a diet for months but there is no obvious results. (她已節食多天，但並無顯著效果。)
7.I am ____ your disposal for the following year. (下一年我聽候您的吩咐。)
英語用詞精密 須謹記在心
8.The parents are worried that their children have to be _____ their own when they leave home for work. (父母們擔憂外出工作時，孩子必須獨留家中。)
9.When ____ doubt, consult your parents. (有疑難時，向父母諮詢。)
10.Mr. Chan is _____ conference. Please wait until he comes out. (陳先生正在開會，請您等候他出來。)
因為每一句都有固定的介詞(preposition)，學起來便必須謹記在心。正正顯示英語世界用詞精密，大家要用心學，多讀多用，自然得心應手。
