 ■屯門普高球隊主力射手張天德日前在其個人網誌內,宣布退出球壇,並指體育精神更勝金錢。

The local first division soccer league was troubled by a match-fixing allegation. During the match on March 31, Tuen Mun Progoal conceded 4 goals to opponent team Valley in the last 7 minutes and ended up losing 1:5. After the game, Progoal's leading goal scorer Cheung Tin-tak posted a message on his blog, announcing that he would step down from the soccer league and strongly criticizing his teammates from the mainland for slackness. He went on to say that “it was all about money”. A director of the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) suggested forming an independent investigation committee to follow up the case. The ICAC said it would look into the matter to see if bribery was involved.

Cheung Tin-tak, who teaches full time in the Church of Christ in China Fong Yun Wah Secondary School in Yuen Long, posted a message entitled“Today I officially announce that I will not play any more for Tuen Mun Progoal. I have had enough!”in his personal blog on April 1. The article sparked a heated debate over suspected match-fixing. Following the exposure of the incident, Cheung deleted the message later that night at around 8:45 pm.

Cheung said on April 2 that the message on the blog was merely a personal opinion and he had never expected such an outcry. He stressed that he did not mean to“drop a bombshell”, and all that he wanted to do was to express his discontentment and relieve his disappointment.

Timothy Fok, president of HKFA, said match-fixing was a serious accusation and the association would follow up the case. Ken Ng Kin, director of HKFA suggested the association form an independent investigation committee to look into the matter. Yam Wai-hung, director of Tuen Mun Progoal, said that after consultation, they believed it was merely a misunderstanding. Pui Kwan-kay, manager of Shek Kip Mei Sports Association which is the origin of Progoal, and vice-chairman of HKFA, said the association had always been vigilant against abnormal game results and he had often inspected games in person as well.

Timothy Tong Hin-ming, commissioner of ICAC, did not comment but said the corruption prevention department would consider including football gambling in their case studies. A spokesperson of ICAC said the commission would probe into any incident that might involve corruption. ■translated by 開明
