香港消防隊成立於1856年，最初是義務性質，由洋人及華人的消防員組成。其後由警隊接管，至1904年才成立專業的消防組織，俗稱「火燭館」。早期的消防車都是人力推動，與現今用引擎推動射水滅火的新式消防車大相逕庭。
Established in 1856, the Hong Kong Fire Brigade (present-day Fire Services Department) was initially a voluntary firefighting force, made up by foreigners and Chinese citizens. Later, the Hong Kong Police took over its management, and only in 1904 did the Fire Brigade become a professional firefighting force, known in Cantonese as “fo juk gwun” (fire station). The early fire engines were all man-powered, a stark contrast to present-day fire trucks with water pumps and powered engines. 資料：香港歷史博物
