Established in 1856, the Hong Kong Fire Brigade (present-day Fire Services Department) was initially a voluntary firefighting force, made up by foreigners and Chinese citizens. Later, the Hong Kong Police took over its management, and only in 1904 did the Fire Brigade become a professional firefighting force, known in Cantonese as “fo juk gwun” (fire station). The early fire engines were all man-powered, a stark contrast to present-day fire trucks with water pumps and powered engines.
