Award Goes to Iron-willed Atrophy Form Five Student

A cheerful free spirit resides in a weak body. Wong Kwan-hang is a Form Five student who suffers from congenital spinal muscular atrophy. He was good at many different activities, such as swimming, ball games and violin, while he was a small boy. Moving on to secondary education at the age of a teenager who should be young and energetic, he found his physical ability seriously impaired. Nevertheless, the chronic disease has failed to bring him down. This young man not only gets high ranking in academic achievement, but is also zealously involved in extra-curricular activities, taking up such duties as master of ceremonies and counseling prefect. He also keeps on encouraging his mother who has always worried about his condition. His self-motivation and self-esteem earn him the respect of others. Recently, in recognition of his performance, he has been given the Best Integrated Student Award in the Shell/Island Jaycees Scholarship For the Disabled.

Wong Kwan-hang, winner of the Best Integrated Student Award, was very active since he was young and it never occurred to anyone that he would be a patient of congenital spinal muscular atrophy. He got good results in studying and successfully entered Munsang College, a secondary school that uses English as medium of instruction.

Since Form One, his muscular atrophy has been worsening day by day and he eventually needs to sit on a wheelchair to move around. His mother, Mrs. Wong who takes care of his everyday life said that she gave physical therapy to Kwan-hang at home every day while he was younger, hoping that he would grow stronger physically; yet, she would often get frustrated when she found her hope not able to realize. Wong Kwan-hang, who is a faithful Christian, comforts her in return. Mrs. Wong said Kwan-hang told her not to worry as everybody would be the same when they were in heaven. Mentioning this, she could not help her tears and was speechless.

Iron-willed Kwan-hang dreams of being a violinist one day. He is now working hard for his dream. Apart from preparing for the HKCEE, he has also enrolled for the violin performance assessment. Although playing violin fatigues him, he insists on practising every day. According to Chan Kee-hoi, head of counseling of Munsang College, who knew Kwan-hang since he was in Form One, Kwan-hang has been in the elite class from Form Three to Form Five, and remained one of the top 20 students in academic achievement. He believes Kwan-hang will be able to get good grades in the HKCEE next year. ■translation by開明
