我的學生經常慨歎詞彙不足，用英語寫作或傾談時，經常感到有所掣肘，未能成功利用英語與外籍人士溝通。我的一貫忠告是：
"Rome was not built in one day!"(羅馬不是於一天建立的！)
若要英語流利、溝通無礙，不能一蹴而就，每天一點一滴地學，積水成淵，英語水平自然提升。
每天學十字 一年懂千字
從今天起，下決心，每天要學10個字。在這欄向您先推介"a"至"j"10個：
1.Allegiance (效忠)
The President swore allegiance to his country on Inauguration Day. (總統在就職日宣誓效忠國家。)
2.Bourgeoisie (資產階級)
There is constant conflict between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie.(無產階級和資產階級存在無休止的衝突。)
3.Conspiracy (陰謀)
They were charged with conspiracy to murder the King. (他們被控告密謀策劃殺死皇帝。)
4.Discrepancy (差異)
The reasons for the discrepancy between boys' and girls' language standards are many. (男孩和女孩的語言程度有差異，原因很多。)
5.Exorbitant (價格過高)
Not many people can afford the exorbitant prices of flats recently.(沒有太多人能付得起最近高得離譜的樓價。)
6.Fallacy (謬論)
Fallacies are hard to detect if one is blinded by self interest.(利慾薰心的人往往不能偵察出謬論。)
7.Grandiose (華而不實)
The grandiose scheme for an international show was voted down.(大家就那華而不實的國際表演計劃投了反對票。)
8.Henpecked(怕老婆的)
That bar is a gathering place for henpecked husbands.(那酒吧是怕老婆的丈夫聚首的地方。)
9.Insinuation (含沙射影)
He resented the insinuation that he was too old for the job.(他憎惡別人含沙射影，說他太老不適合那工作。)
10.Jeopardize (損害)
Drugs and alcohol definitely will jeopardize your career.(毒品及酒精肯定會損害你的事業。)
