語文的用語，很多都來自日常的事物和觀察。中英文其實一樣，所以有許多相似的表達方式。今次舉出兩個與牙齒有關的用語。
首先是teeth-gnashing。中文有咬牙切齒，形容人憤怒時的表情。英文亦有類似的說法，說某人gnash his/her teeth，表示那人咬牙切齒，以至於發出聲音，即非常憤怒或失望。
People gnashed their teeth after hearing these scandals.
人們聽到這些醜聞後，都咬牙切齒。
We could only gnash our teeth when we lost the game in the last minute.
最後一分鐘輸掉球賽，我們只好失望得咬牙切齒。
Gnash one's teeth 引伸強烈指責
引伸出來，gnash one's teeth可解作對某些事物作出強烈的投訴或指責。而teeth gnashing/ gnashing of teeth就可用作名詞，指很多不滿及投訴的聲音。
Family members of the patient gnashed their teeth when they knew about the misconduct of the hospital.
病人家屬知道醫院的不當行為之後，咬牙切齒地表達不滿。
There has been a lot of teeth-gnashing from the residents since the government announced the building of a landfill site in the district.
政府宣布在區內興建堆填區後，區內居民咬牙切齒地表達了強烈不滿。
Grit his/her teeth有如咬緊牙關
還有一個也是與牙齒有關的用語，說某人grit his/her teeth。這與中文的咬緊牙關相似，即緊閉上下顎，代表這人正處於痛苦或壓力之中，而又不希望表達出來。
He was in great pain after the injury but he gritted his teeth.
受傷後，他感到很劇烈的痛楚，不過他咬緊牙關強忍下來。
跟中文咬緊牙關一樣，grit one's teeth亦可引伸解釋在困難時候咬緊牙關，面對現實，堅強應付。
Under the present financial situation, we have to grit our teeth and work harder.
在目前的財政狀況下，我們必須咬緊牙關，勤力工作。
Don't give up. Grit your teeth and hang in there.
不要放棄。咬緊牙關，堅持到底。
要用英文表達咬牙切齒、咬緊牙關這些情緒的時候，應該不難聯想到有關的英文用語。
