We sometimes say "I'm having turkey for Christmas" - meaning that you are going to eat turkey for your Christmas dinner. The boy is asking for a dog for Christmas (as a present), but his mother thinks he is asking to eat a dog for Christmas dinner.
男孩問媽媽聖誕禮物可不可以是一隻狗,媽媽誤以為他問可不可以吃狗(聖誕節吃火雞有類似說法:having turkey for Christmas)。
