英文字manner（單數）和manners（眾數）的意思有所不同。單數的manner解作處事方式或方法。
He always talked to people in a cold and unfriendly manner. （他經常以極為冷漠、不太友善的方式和別人說話。）
They should have dealt with the case in a fair manner. （他們本應用公平的方法處理這件事。）
Good manners有禮貌
另一方面，眾數的manners指的是禮儀、禮貌，是在公眾地方或社交場合應該有的行為舉止儀態，以及對人的禮貌，即是社會公認的良好操守和正當表現。一個人有禮貌，行為端正，就是has good manners（有禮貌）；反之，一個人沒有禮貌，行為不當，就會說這人has bad manners或has no manners （沒有禮貌）。
It's considered bad manners to talk loudly in public places. （在公眾地方高聲說話會被視為失儀、行為不當。）
Some people simply have no manners. They jostle in the crowd and don't queue up. （一些人就是沒有禮貌。他們在人群中擠撞前行，又不排隊。）
有時會聽到大人對小朋友說：Where are your manners?（你的禮貌哪裡去了？）意思就是小朋友的行為不太檢點、無禮，該要留意了。如果要提醒別人保持禮貌，亦可以用mind your manners（注重你的禮儀）、remember/ don't forget your manners（別忘了保持禮儀）。
Oh, kids, where are your manners? Behave yourselves. （孩子們，不顧禮貌了嗎？注意你們的行為。）
We have to remember our manners especially when we are traveling. （我們必須注重禮儀，特別是在外遊的時候。）
教育家：發自內心尊重別人
禮貌其實是一種尊重自己和顧及別人的表現。與大家分享一下兩位美國作家對禮儀的一些看法。大家不必完全同意，但可反思參考。
19世紀教育家Catherine Beecher說：
Good manners are the expressions of benevolence in personal intercourse, by which we endeavor to promote the comfort and enjoyment of others, and to avoid all that gives needless uneasiness. （禮貌是在人際交往中展現善意，行為上盡量令別人感到舒適愉悅，避免不必要地令人感到不快。）
另一位是寫有關禮儀的作家Emily Post：
