Verona bans "ethnic" food to stay pure
¦]¦¹¥þ¬q¥i^Ķ¦p¤U¡GIn face of the "intrusion" of Turkish Kebab stalls, the municipal government of Verona, a historic Italian city, passed a law last week to ban the opening of any restaurants or fast food shops selling "ethnic" food, with an aim to protect the local food culture.
Famous for its slowly simmered red-wine risotto, Verona is facing the competition of fast food culture in recent years. Despite the increasing demand for late-night fast food shops like the one selling Kebab, conservatives had grown discontent with such places. The new provision would protect not only the historic and architectural patrimony but the food culture of the city, according to Flavio Tosi, Verona's far-right mayor.
Venice is also going to regulate market stalls and souvenir shops operated by immigrants. Brugnaro, mayor of Venice, said those shops are offering products with unknown origins that go against the tradition and history of Venice, leading to "Disneyfication" and consequently causing public concern. Some claim that the ruling discriminates against immigrants living in the city, especially Muslims. In earlier time, the provision required the integration of newly built religious buildings with the original, which is said to have aimed at mosques and was finally nullified by Italy's highest court.
