■桑德斯（右）民調雖比希拉里（左）低，但堅持繼續競選。 資料圖片近期熱門新聞之一是美國的總統提名戰。民主黨由兩名參選人希拉里和桑德斯競逐。到了後期，雖然希拉里得票和民調都領先，但桑德斯很有體育精神，未到終局堅持繼續競選，沒有放棄。有新聞報道提到：
Sanders refused to throw in the towel.
桑德斯拒絕扔下毛巾（退選）。
所謂 throw in the towel（扔下毛巾），即是admit defeat，承認落敗，放棄。此語由拳擊比賽而來。當拳手不能或不想繼續，教練就會把白毛巾拋入場內，示意停止比賽，放棄競逐，承認失敗。
後來，這說法用到拳擊以外，比喻知道沒有勝算，放棄角逐。除了throw之外，亦可以用chuck，都是「拋、扔掉」的意思。
扔海綿也可
在拳擊場內，除了扔毛巾，也會扔掉拳擊用的海綿示意退出比賽，所以亦有說 throw/chuck in the sponge，意思都一樣，表示放棄或退出，承認落敗。
The other three candidates for the Republican presidential nomination have already thrown in the towel.
共和黨總統提名戰的其他3位競逐者都已經宣佈退選。
Not able to cope with the workload at university, he decided to chuck in the towel.
由於應付不了大學的功課量，他決定退學。

簡單說back out或drop out
說到退出選舉、競逐、比賽等等，除了說throw/chuck in the towel/sponge，亦可簡單地用back out或drop out等字眼，都解作未到最後就選擇退出。
He dropped out of the competition after two rounds, probably because of injury.
打了兩個回合，他宣佈退出比賽，可能是受傷的緣故。
He is not ready to admit defeat. So he has chosen not to back out but stay in.
他仍未打算承認落敗。因此，他選擇不退出，堅持下去。
不久，香港和世界各地都會有很多選舉，將會有很多機會接觸到這些字眼。大家可多留意。
