早前去了一個非洲樂團的音樂會。非洲歌舞節拍輕快強勁，觀眾非常投入，不時隨着音樂拍掌，每節表演完畢，觀眾亦熱烈鼓掌，以示支持。拍掌這動作除了是興奮的表現，同時亦表達了對表演者的讚賞。
Clap擊掌 Applaud鼓掌
「拍掌」英文動詞是clap，意思是拍擊雙手發出聲音，可以是不及物動詞，單用clap，亦可以用作及物動詞，說clap hands。
Audience clapped in time to the music as the band sang and danced on the stage.
樂隊在台上又唱又跳之時，觀眾隨着音樂節奏拍掌。
They clapped their hands happily all along during the concert.
在整個音樂會中，他們一直很開心地拍掌。
Clap字面上是動作，但一般是發放正面信息的身體語言，用來表達欣賞或贊同。
在表演節目或演講完畢時，觀眾都會鼓掌表示讚賞、認同。這時可以用另一個英文字applaud，同樣是鼓掌喝彩，明確地表示稱讚、嘉許。
Clap可以是動詞或名詞，而applaud是動詞，名詞是applause。
Fans clapped and cheered when the team won the champion.
球隊贏得冠軍時，球迷都鼓掌歡呼。
All members in the meeting applauded when the chairman finished his speech.
主席致辭完畢時，會議上全體成員都鼓掌。
We should all applaud his decision. It will help many people.
我們應該全體支持他的決定。這決定將會幫助許多人。
Everyone in the hall gave a big loud clap to the young talented pianist.
會場內每一個人都大力拍掌讚許那個有才華的年輕鋼琴家。
He received a round of applause for his superb performance in the play.
他在話劇中有超卓表現，獲現場觀眾鼓掌喝彩。
Slow handclap不滿不耐煩
雖然拍掌通常表示讚賞，但亦有例外的情形。觀眾或群眾可以用緩慢而有節奏的拍掌聲表達對台上講者、場上表演者的不滿、不耐煩或不認同。
這就是slow handclap的意思。Slow handclap一樣可以是動詞或名詞，有時單說handclap也會有這意味。
Audience slow-handclapped the infamous politician when he entered.
那個聲名狼藉的政客進場時，觀眾以緩慢拍掌表達不滿。
The team, not playing well in the match, was given boos and slow handclaps.
那球隊在賽事中表現十分不濟，球迷噓聲四起，又緩慢拍掌以示不滿。
The minister received a slow handclap during his talk about increasing tax.
部長發表加稅講話時，在場人士緩慢拍掌表示不滿。
拍手其實有不同的意思，可以用來發聲吸引注意，表達開心、欣賞或認同，亦是一種禮貌的表現。在另一些特殊情形下，又可表現一些不滿的情緒。使用handclap這個字時，就要留意。
