要形容一些人富有、有錢、經濟穩妥，很多時都會用rich、wealthy、well-off、well-to-do等等形容詞，今次談另一個意思相似的well-heeled。
當中的heel是「腳後跟、腳踭」，即是足踝，但這個字也可以解「鞋跟、鞋踭」。用作動詞時，heel就是「裝上鞋跟」的意思，high-heeled shoes就是指高跟鞋。然而，英文詞well-heeled形容的卻不是鞋，而是人。以前一般認為只有有錢人才穿得起一雙像樣的鞋子，窮人不能負擔質素好的鞋子，所以一對質素好的鞋子好好地裝上了鞋跟，就成為富有的象徵，於是well-heeled就成為「富有、有錢」的代用詞。
They come from very well-heeled families, so they don't have to worry about money.
他們出身十分富裕的家庭，故此不愁沒錢花。
The hotels and facilities there are targeted at well-heeled high-end tourists.
那裡的酒店和設施是專為高端的富有遊客而設。
The people in this town, though not well-heeled, are optimistic and hardworking.
這城裡的人雖然並不富有，但樂觀勤奮。
跟其他許多形容詞的用法一樣，用上冠詞的the well-heeled就成為名詞，泛指富有的一群。那些不太富有、經濟環境不太好的一群，也許就可以稱為the not so well-heeled。
Only the well-heeled can afford a flat in this expensive district.
只有大富之家才負擔得起在這個豪宅地區的單位。
The government should try to do something for the not so well-heeled in society.
政府應該想一些辦法照顧社會上不太充裕的人們。
既然上等鞋跟可以反映財富，穿着破爛鞋跟的鞋子也就顯示了貧困、缺乏。因此，down-at-heel/heels或down-at-the heel/heels，即鞋跟已殘舊了、磨損了，就是用來形容一些人貧窮、沒錢，穿着破舊、外表潦倒，而這個詞也可以引申描繪一些地方破落，環境惡劣。
Children in the poor village look down-at-heel because their parents don't have extra money to buy them new clothes.
這條貧窮村莊的小孩子都是衣衫襤褸，因為他們的父母沒有多餘錢給他們買新衣裳。
The old down-at-heels restaurant round the corner is not very attractive to customers.
轉角那老舊、環境破落的餐廳對於顧客並不很吸引。
Many people are now living in sub-divided flats which are badly maintained and down-at-the-heels.
目前有不少人居住在環境齷齪、破落不堪的劏房。
