■青瓜可比喻一個人處事非常冷靜。 資料圖片轉眼已到秋天，沒有了暑熱，換來了秋涼，氣溫下降，帶來舒適的cool weather，即是涼快的天氣。大家都知道形容詞cool即是「涼」，不冷不熱。然而，這個字用來形容天氣之外，亦可以形容其他事物，例如cool water（涼水）、cool air（涼風）、cool evening（涼夜）等等。
這個cool「涼」的概念也可應用在人身上，用cool形容一個人，就是說這人冷靜、鎮定，不輕易激動或發怒、不易受情緒影響。
He is always cool and calm. He never loses his temper.
他一向冷靜鎮定，不會發脾氣。
Stay cool. You can't solve the problem if you get enraged.
保持冷靜。你一旦動怒，就不能解決問題。
有一個常用的比喻是cool as a cucumber（涼如青瓜），就是以清熱消暑的青瓜比喻一個人處事非常冷靜，不會張皇失措。
The pilot was cool as a cucumber during the storm and the plane finally landed safely.
在風暴中，機師依然鎮定自若，終於駕駛飛機安全降落。
此外，還有一句常用短語keep a cool head（保持涼的頭），即是保持頭腦冷靜，在有困難有壓力的時候，冷靜應對。
It's really hard to keep a cool head working in such a stressful office.
在壓力這麼大的辦公室工作，真的很難保持頭腦冷靜。
由此可見，cool有時不只是「涼」，甚至有「冷」的意思。這個字也可以形容一個人冷漠、不友善，表現出不感興趣、不歡迎的態度。
I don't know what I had done wrong but I got a cool reception at the party.
我不知道自己做錯了什麼，可是我在宴會上遇到冷淡對待。
She is definitely not a popular politician. People are cool towards her.
她肯定是不受歡迎的政客。人們待她極不友善。
除了「涼」和「冷」，cool亦有其他意思，例如cool可以是「好」，口語不時用cool表示贊同、讚好。
I think a staycation is cool. We can have fun without travelling a lot.
我覺得留港度假很不錯。我們不用長途跋涉也可以享樂一番。
"Are you interested in going on a hike this Sunday?" "Yes, cool, I will join."
「你有興趣這個星期天遠足嗎？」「好呀，我會去。」
同時，cool也帶有新潮、時尚、時髦、好看的意思，有點像廣東話的「型」。

他剛剛買了一雙很有型的新款運動鞋。

戴口罩可能不好看，但是可以預防感染病毒。
簡簡單單的一個 cool字，卻有很多不同意思，可以是溫度涼快、頭腦冷靜、態度冷漠，亦可以是不錯很好、時尚好看。所以要根據實際情況和背景，才可以確切了解和表達其真正涵意，才會應用得宜，用得好、解得準。雖說簡單易用，卻也不要濫用。
