中國人學英語，很多時候被英語世界內的習語(Idioms)難倒，因為即使我們認得這些習語(也稱慣用語)內的文字，也未必明白其意思。舉一個簡單的例子：
甲對朋友說："Stop beating about the bush!"朋友若不懂這習語，真的會「丈八金剛，摸不着頭腦」！為何叫我「停止敲打叢林」？原來beat about the bush是一句習語，意思是「轉彎抹角地說話」。因此，若我們照字面意思嘗試去理解英語習語時，便會碰釘子了！

真意難猜 容易估錯
這些習語都有特別意思，沒有接觸過的朋友當然只能猜它們的含義，但極可能估錯。
A blank cheque並不是「空頭支票」，原來是「空白支票」，是已簽名但未填金額的支票。
A dog's breakfast原來不是狗的早餐！"Mr. Ho has made a real dog's breakfast of the reform package."並非指何先生煮了一頓狗糧，而是說他把政改方案弄得一團糟。
To get somebody's goat也與山羊無關，而是指「使某人極氣惱」。例句：
Mr. Wong's criticism of the Democratic Party's proposal is really getting their goat.
黃先生批評民主黨的建議方案，真的把人氣死了。
從上述例子可見，英語世界內的習語，妙用無窮，只要適當採用，才能一針見血，語到意到！
