之前與同學分享了不少關於reading的基本方法，今天會換一換話題，跟同學討論一下如何寫好議論文。
簡單說，好的議論文應具有以下的條件：
1. 有明確立場。
2. 運用議論文的寫作技巧。
3. Arguments（論點）沒有邏輯上的fallacy（謬誤）。
4. 文章language沒有太多的mistakes。
以下是一些常用的寫作技巧：
1. 應運用polite（有禮）和tactful（適當）的詞彙
寫議論文的目的是要persuade（說服）別人接納你的意見，無論你覺得異見者的意見幾不合理，切忌運用rude或belittling（貶低）的terms，又或者抨擊異見者本人，而不討論那controversial issue（有爭議的議題）：
People with any intelligence agree with the benefits of public exams. (X)
以上的例子只會令反對公開試的人感到憤怒。你可將上面的例子作如下改寫：
e.g. Supporters of public exam maintain that its benefits outweigh the drawbacks. (○)
2. Point out the common ground
要成功persuade讀者接受你的意見，例如你的論點是公開試在教育上扮演着一個不可缺少的角色，你可以在文中開始時指出正反兩方的共同目標：提高現時的教育質素。倘若你能這樣做，會較容易令別人接受你的意見。

3. Acknowledge（承認）不同的意見
要知道arguments通常都會有正反兩面，倘若你完全漠視或否定不同意見的存在的可能，這只會令你的arguments看上去很不合理。除此之外，正視反對者意見可讓你找出他們argument中的漏洞，有助你之後在文中加以反駁。
通常我們會在文中起首的部分，指出社會上對某個議題有不同的意見，順便提出自己的論點。例如：While some people hold that public exams "kill" students' interest in learning, I still believe its benefits outweigh the so-called disadvantages. 這句中除了交代社會上不同的聲音，亦表達了作者的意見。
同學們不妨在下次寫議論文時用一下以上跟你們討論的方法。 （之三）
