Take care of oldie roommate to live rent-free in Manhattan
¦]¦¹¥þ¬q¥i^Ķ¦p¤U¡GProperty price is standing high in New York City, making it hard for young people to find an ideal home. In recent years, there have been elderly people providing free accommodation for young people in exchange for being taken care of. Carl, a 30-year-old Ph.D. student of classical music, is living with a 90-year-old oldie in Manhattan. He believes this way of living is mutually beneficial; he can both save the rent and do his roommate a favor.
Rents in both Manhattan and Brooklyn are at an all-time high: monthly rents in the third quarter of this year amount to USD 3,339 and 2,600 respectively (approximately HKD 26,000 and 20,000). The rent in Manhattan has increased by 9.5% annually, the biggest jump since 2008. The tightened mortgage lending conditions were restraining many from buying houses, who in turn simply rent apartments, creating chaos in the demand of rental market and pushing up rental prices, property consultant Miller explained.
Even free of charge, not every one is willing to live with elderly people. Some choose to rent a place with roommates to share rental costs, while some prefer cheap hostels. The Menno House in Manhattan offers 14 rooms with a monthly rent as low as USD 500 (around HKD 3,875), but leases are only up to two years lest tenants refuse to move out.¡½Ãe¹Å»ö
