以眾數模樣出現但乃不可數名詞的The works可指建築工地，或泛指築橋補路等建築活動，又可指運行中的道路系統︰「All those Sunday drivers have really gummed up the works on the already hectic Nathan Road, making doubly hard work of what should have been a less than 30-minute drive from Mongkok to Tsim Sha Tsui.」（那些周日才出動的駕駛者令本已水洩不通的彌敦道更見擁塞，由旺角到尖沙咀不到30分鐘的駕程現時舉步維艱。）例句中的動詞片詞gum up the works指阻塞車路，另外的動詞片詞「make doubly hard work of（或make heavy/ hard work of something）」解作做事困難，特別指化簡為繁的笨拙行為。留意片語的work是不可數名詞，沒有s啊！
相反，「make light/fast/quick/short work of something」就是化繁為簡的智者之舉。當中make short work of這動詞片語尤其有趣，其義在不同文章脈絡（context）中可正可負。11月中旬，中國國家隊與香港足球隊在世界盃外圍賽再次交鋒，「Many hardcore fans made short work of their normally hectic work schedule so that they could go line up for a good seat at Mong Kok Stadium to chant and cheer for the Hongkong Team.」（不少香港隊的忠實球迷為了佔到有利的觀賽位置吶喊助威，匆匆完成手頭上繁重工作，早早到旺角大球場外排隊入場。）在這例句中，「make short work of」指迅速解決事務。
為避免內地與香港的球迷give each other the works（出現衝突），大會將雙方無論在入場、座位甚至洗手間都採取分隔措施。碰面可避，卻阻不了在播放國歌時在觀眾席上傳出的喝倒彩聲，可說是throw/put a monkey wrench in the works for the organizers（破壞了大會的原定計劃）。「Monkey wrench」是美式英語的螺絲扳手，英式英語相同意思的片詞則是「throw/ put a spanner in the works」，「spanner」正是港人俗稱的「士巴拿」。
賽事最後以零比零完場，「Neither team made short work of their opponents.」（雙方都沒有壓倒性的勝利）。球賽和氣收場，但兩隊晉級之路亦更見崎嶇。國家隊要分別戰勝馬爾代夫（Maldives）和卡塔爾（Qatar），港隊亦要對壘在外圍賽中暫時戰無不勝的強敵卡塔爾。「Hong Kong Team will have their work cut out if they are to win Qatar to earn their chance of reaching the next round.」（港隊要戰勝勁旅晉級可謂任務艱鉅。）「Have one's work cut out 」意思是面對困窘需全力應付。
但凡事無絕對，「Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Football Association, Mark Sutcliffee, made short work of the assumptions that it would be impossible for the Hongkong Team to beat Qata」（香港足球總會行政主席薛基輔拒絕認同香港晉級無望。）香港，加油！
